Grill Checklist: What to Prepare for a Perfect BBQ Experience

First time or not, we always tend to forget a thing or two from the equipment we need to carry or prepare when organising a barbecue party.

So, to make your barbecue gathering more delightful and less stressful, here is a complete list of the things you will need in grilling.

1. Grill

We know what you’re thinking: should it be gas or charcoal?

For one, a charcoal grill produces a higher temperature compared to gas. It creates stronger and smokier barbecue flavours. Charcoal grills are also cheaper and more portable.

The downside to charcoal is, its flames can be unpredictable, and harder to ignite and control. If you’re not in a hurry, use a charcoal grill on your bbq gathering.

A gas grill, on the other hand, produces simpler barbecue zest. But, you can efficiently control its flames and temperature, and it’s also easier to ignite and scrape.

Either way, investing in a high-quality grill set is the best way to go. Whether you choose charcoal or propane, make sure to select a model with efficient features.

2. Fuel or Charcoal

Obvious enough, you will need charcoal briquettes for a charcoal grill (plus a few newspaper sheets to stir fire in a chimney starter). If you’re using a gas model, bring a canister of propane. Regardless, make sure you have enough gas or charcoal and some more in case the need comes up.

The easiest way to light charcoal, lump hardwood, or briquettes is through a chimney starter. Make sure to opt for a high-capacity type, or you will probably discover that you need more than one to light enough charcoals (traditional kettle grills work best with 50 briquettes).

Initiate the fire with an odourless, tasteless fuel starter or crumpled newspaper. You know the charcoal is in its perfect cooking temperature when it’s covered with white-grey ash.

Grilling can be a dirty job. And if you do not want your attire ruined in any case, carry a durable apron.

Go for one that will not only cover you from ashes and sauce but also a design that comes with pockets to hold your grill gear.

5. Grill Glove

Oven mitts are cute, but you will need more than those when dealing with a hot grill. So, choose large grill mitts that come close to the elbow.

And since a lot of designs and materials are available in the market, make sure to find a pair that will protect you from the flames — when handling coals, flipping burgers, or moving food around the grill.

6. Aluminium Foil

You can protect delicate foods such as fish and vegetable from falling through your grate by using some aluminium foil. Wrap the dishes up before cooking them on the grill.

7. Skewers

Skewers are a staple in any barbecue gathering. Wooden sticks are the most inexpensive option.

Make sure to soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before use or else they will burn.

8. Spatula

Silicone and metal spatulas are two of the best options for grilling. Either way, make sure it’s designed with an offset handle that lets you easily slip it under the food.

They work best with delicate foods that need a swift flip, such as fish and patties.

9. Long-Handles Tongs

Tongs are one of the most useful and versatile tools in grilling — from cooking thick steaks and hotdogs to thin asparagus spears and prawns.

So, for the best grilling experience, use a pair long enough to keep your hands away from the heat. You can also opt for designs with wooden or rubber handles.

10. Basting Brush

One excellent way to add more flavour to your grilled cuisines is through basting — spooning, brushing, or pouring sauces into the food.

With this task, you will need a good basting brush that’s typically made with plastic or dishwasher-safe silicone bristles.

11. Meat Thermometer

Overcooked meat will not satisfy you and your guests’ barbecue cravings for sure. So, take advantage of an instant-read meat thermometer to determine the food’s temperature.

For beef, it needs to be cooked at at least 145º, pork at least 160º, poultry at least 165º, and lamb at least 145º. When testing, make sure to do it near the end of the recommended cooking time. Also, drill the thermometer into the centre of the thickest part of the meat, away from the bone.

12. Towel

Again, the unavoidable truth about grilling is that it is dirty work. And in most cases, using an apron to wipe your hands with throughout the cooking can be unsanitary.

So, loop a clean towel through your apron strap and keep another near your grill. Make sure to use 100% cotton designs, so they are absorbent and not prone to burning.

13. Grill Brush

A clean grill is synonymous to healthy cooking. So, make sure to keep it clean before every use.

To do so, preheat the rack with all burners high for 10-15 mins. It will incinerate any remaining residue from the last grilling session, making it easier to clean.

Then, with your grill brush, scrub the grates forcefully until they are smooth and free from food. For this equipment, brass-bristle grill brushes are recommended instead of steel bristles since the latter can damage the enamel finish of some grates.

14. Fire extinguisher
