It may be cold outside. But that doesn’t mean we’re not dreaming of and preparing for summer. When summer comes, you’ll want your garden to look gorgeous, so here are seven pretty flowers to have in your garden for summertime!
Lavender has an iconic colour and fragrance. It’s also easy to grow and it thrives in the sunshine, making it a perfect fuss free option for summer. Lavender can also increase pollination as it attracts bees and other pollinating insects, so double win! Be sure to keep in mind that it’s best planted around spring in free drained soil.
In the long run, lavender only needs limited pruning. But it’s recommended that you use a hardy lavender if you were to plant it outside, in order for it to survive winter.
There are several types of Irises, each one with a spectrum of colours. Their prevailing shades include purple, lavender, white and yellow.
These flowers bloom best in full sunlight. But when will the flower bloom? Well, this can vary. But irises primarily bloom in the spring or summer. If it’s a variety that can re-bloom, it will produce the flowers in late summer or early autumn.
It would be best to grow them out in the garden, rather than in a vase as the flower would only live for a week. For pets, the bulbs can be toxic to them. So precautions should be made to ensure no harm to your pets.
This iconic flower is a symbol of summer. The Sunflower’s classic yellow colour will look fantastic in your garden on a summers day. However, despite its good looks, sunflowers can be lot of work to grow and maintain in the UK.
They must be grown somewhere where there is a lot of available sunlight, as the flower is heliotropic, which means that it grows in the direction of its main light source. They should also be grown in compost-rich soil in order for them to absorb all the nutrients they need.
Birds and squirrels can eat the sunflowers seeds, but netting over the planted area is an option to help prevent this. When growing, sunflowers need support. So they’re best grown next to a fence or building or you could even create your own Sunflower tower.
As long as they are not overwatered or overfertilized, sunflowers will grow tall and will last a long time until the first bit of frost is on the ground.
Also known as Hemerocallis, many gardeners have described daylilies as “the perfect perennial”. They are a beautiful flower, filled with colour, and can grow up to 1.5m tall.
You should aim to plant them around spring or autumn. They are hardy, can grow in all kinds of soil in either full or partial shade, and require little care. All that’s needed is some compost or mulch.
