You can create it all with a bit of time, imagination, and some craft sessions. Bring your friends and family together and wow them with your very own DIY Halloween garden decor with the help of your rattan garden furniture.

Getting Creative with DIY Decor

After buying my first home, I turned into a DIY enthusiast practically overnight. At first, it was the little touches to improve my space in a practical way. But with years of event organising under my belt, it soon developed into more creative projects. Now, when there’s an occasion to celebrate, I like to go all out with my decorations. I’ve researched and tested some of the most effective Halloween decorations that look great and can be made on a budget. In this guide, I offer you ten totally attainable ideas along with plenty of hints and tips to make your spooky season party a success.

Materials Needed

To get your garden Halloween-ready, here are some basic materials you will need. But a full list for each idea is listed below:

  • Scissors
  • Marker pens
  • Pencil
  • Masking tape
  • String or garden/fishing twine
  • Spray sealant
  • Candles
  • Lighter or matches
  • Safety pins
  • Sharp knife

Ten DIY Halloween Decoration Ideas

1. Ghost-draped Rattan Chairs

A speedy way to add some spook to your garden is to transform your rattan chairs into ghosts.

You will need:

  • Rattan chairs
  • White sheets
  • Black marker or black card
  • White pencil
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue

Drape the sheets over the chairs to create a ghostly shape. If you’re not planning on using the sheets again, you can cut the bottoms to the shape you want. Next, you will need to add some black eyes and a mouth. You can either draw these directly on with a black marker or make some eyes and a mouth from black card. Attach the card to the fabric with fabric glue.

Top tip: If you don’t have spare white sheets, check charity shops or second-hand platforms like eBay or Vinted.

Time needed: 5-10 minutes per chair.

2. Spiderweb Garden Parasol

Spiderwebs are a Halloween staple! Adding some webs across your furniture is a great and quick way to add atmosphere.

You will need:

  • Garden parasol
  • Spider web bunting
  • Safety pins
  • A ladder or chair to stand on

Instead of traditional spider web decor, which can harm wildlife, opt for spider web bunting and attach it to the parasol with safety pins. For added effect, you can drape layers of the bunting at different lengths.

Time needed: Around 1 hour, longer if doing multiple layers.

3. Witch’s Cauldron Fire Pit Centrepiece

A bubbling witch’s cauldron is a Halloween classic! You can create your own with a DIY kit for ease.

You will need:

  • DIY witch’s cauldron kit
  • Fire pit or BBQ

Follow the instructions on the kit, and place the cauldron above your fire pit for a spooky effect. If you’re not using the fire pit, you can arrange logs in a pyramid to make it look ready to light.

Time needed: 35 minutes total (20 to assemble the cauldron, 15 to position).

4. Atmospheric Garden Arch

Create an eerie atmosphere for your guests by decorating your garden arch with ‘keep out’ signs.

You will need:

  • Strips of thick cardboard
  • Black and red paints or marker pens
  • Sealing spray
  • Double-sided tape
  • Chair or ladder

Make warning signs using cardboard, write spooky messages, and spray with a sealant. Attach the signs with double-sided tape in diagonal lines across the arch.

Top tip: Add extra signs or creepy props like old dolls for a more dramatic finish.

Time needed: 1 hour to make signs, 30 minutes to attach them.

5. Glowing Eyes in Garden Planters

Rattan planters in particular offer a natural, rustic look, but a quick way to transform them into something eerie is to add glowing eyes.

You will need:

  • Garden planters
  • Toilet roll or kitchen roll tube
  • Pen
  • Scissors or sharp knife
  • Glow sticks

Draw eye shapes on the toilet roll tube and cut them out. Pop a glow stick inside the tube and hide it in your bushes. At night, the glowing eyes will add a spooky effect to your garden.

Time needed: 15 minutes per set of eyes, plus 15 minutes to position them.

6. Skeleton-Scene Rattan Bistro Set

If you have a rattan bistro set, set up a fun skeleton scene to surprise your guests.

You will need:

  • Rattan bistro set
  • Skeletons
  • Props to create a scene

Arrange the skeleton(s) in your rattan chairs and use props to create a fun or eerie scene. You can make it look like they’re having dinner or reading a book by candlelight.

Top tip: Use poseable skeletons for easier setup.

Time needed: 45 minutes to pose the skeleton and arrange the props.

7. Bat-Infested Garden Lighting

Transform your garden lights into a bat-infested feature for Halloween by adding bat decorations.

You will need:

  • Weatherproof garden lights
  • Egg cartons
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Black paint
  • Googly eyes
  • Fishing twine

To create bats, cut up an egg carton and paint it black. Add googly eyes and attach them to your garden lights using fishing twine. You can also buy lightweight bat decorations for quicker setup.

Time needed: 20 minutes per bat, plus drying time. Another 5 minutes per bat to attach them to the lights.

8. Mummy-Wrapped Rattan Sun Lounger

Just because it’s autumn doesn’t mean you can’t use your sun loungers. Wrap them in gauze bandages to create mummy loungers!

You will need:

  • Rattan sun loungers
  • Gauze bandage

Wrap the bandages around your sun lounger, starting from the top and working your way down. Leave some bandage ends trailing for effect.

Time needed: 30 minutes per lounger.

9. Potion Bottle-Decorated Bar Cart

Transform your garden bar or table into a spooky potion station for Halloween-themed drinks.

You will need:

  • Rattan bar cart or table
  • A range of glassware (tumblers, bottles, mason jars)
  • Labels (pre-bought or homemade)
  • Pens

Create spooky labels for your drinks, with fun names like Witch’s Brew or Polyjuice Potion. Attach the labels to your bottles or glasses and arrange them on your rattan bar cart.

Top tip: Check charity shops or car boot sales for budget-friendly glassware.

Time needed: 10 minutes per label, plus additional time to come up with creative drink names.

10. A Classic Jack-o’-Lantern

No Halloween is complete without a Jack-o’-Lantern. Carve pumpkins of different shapes and sizes to create a spooky display.

You will need:

  • Variety of pumpkins
  • Marker pens
  • Sharp knife
  • Candles (tea lights work well)

Carve out your pumpkins, place candles inside, and arrange them on your rattan table for a glowing Halloween effect.

Top tip: Don’t waste the pumpkin flesh! Use it to make soup or roast the seeds for a snack.

Time needed: Around 2 hours for carving.

Safety Considerations

Always prioritize safety when working on DIY projects. Make sure sharp tools are handled carefully, aerosols are sprayed away from open flames, and heavy items like furniture are moved with assistance. Ensure your Halloween decorations are secure and won’t fall or blow away. Keep open flames out of reach of children and away from flammable materials, and make sure your garden is well-lit to prevent trips and falls.

Freaky Food Ideas

Ghoulish Grilled Meats

Make your burger buns into monsters by cutting the cheese into zig-zags for teeth and adding olive eyes using cocktail sticks.

Petrifying Pizza

Customize your pizza by turning mushrooms into skulls, black olives into spiders, and mozzarella into ghosts.

Creepy Crawly Jelly

Add gummy worms or creepy-crawly sweets into jelly for a fun treat that kids will love.

Post-Party Cleanup

Once your party is over, clean and store your Halloween decor carefully for next year. Pack everything into a plastic box with a secure lid, making sure fragile items are wrapped to prevent damage. If storing your rattan furniture in a shed, cover it with a blanket or tarpaulin after cleaning to protect it from weather damage.
