Our garden log cabins are among our best-selling wooden buildings – and unlike many sellers, we design and manufacture our log cabin kits ourselves. Decades spent perfecting that craft mean we know exactly what it takes to build a garden log cabin that lasts, and our direct-from-the-factory approach makes a high-quality cabin an affordable upgrade for almost any garden. Our interlocking timber creates a secure, weather-resistant building you can rely on, available in a range of sizes and suitable for a whole host of uses.
Every BillyOh log cabin is designed and manufactured in-house rather than bought in and badged, milled from interlocking tongue-and-groove timber for a secure, weather-resistant seal. Choose from fully insulated models with double-glazing and our EcoQuilt roof and floor technology for true year-round use, add optional in-house pressure treatment for a low-maintenance building, and build with confidence knowing every cabin is backed by a 10-year guarantee and an expert team on hand to support you through your build.

FAQs
In most cases, no. Under UK Permitted Development rights, the majority of our customers do not need planning permission, provided the cabin isn't in your front garden, doesn't take up more than 50% of your total outdoor space, and isn't used as self-contained living accommodation.
The crucial boundary rule: Over our years of advising customers, the most common pitfall we see is confusion around fences. If you place your cabin within 2 metres of your property boundary, the entire building cannot exceed 2.5m in height. If you place it further than 2m away from any boundary, it can be taller (up to 4m for an apex roof).
Because we know garden space is at a premium and most people want to build near their fence lines, we specifically engineer the majority of our BillyOh log cabins to sit comfortably under the 2.5m maximum height limit. This deliberate design choice saves you the time, cost, and headache of submitting council planning applications.
Permitted development rights cover most homes, but not all. Your cabin may need full planning permission regardless of its size or position if any of the following apply to your property:
It's a listed building, or sits within its curtilage (this includes outbuildings near a listed home).
You're in a conservation area, National Park, or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) — tighter limits often apply, particularly to buildings at the side of the property.
Permitted development rights have been removed. On some newer estates and in some areas, the council issues an Article 4 direction or attaches a planning condition that strips out PD rights. This is common where the council wants to control how a development looks.
The property is a flat, maisonette, or other non-house dwelling — PD rights for outbuildings apply to houses, not flats.
If you're unsure, your local planning authority can confirm your property's status before you buy, and it's worth a quick check — it's far cheaper than moving a cabin later.
For most of our cabins, the expected installation timeframe is around 2–3 days, though this depends on the size of your cabin and your own DIY experience – this may sit at the longer end for a larger unit or for first-time builders. Our interlocking log design means the panels stack in sequence without specialist skills, and we design our cabins to be an enjoyable project to put together rather than a chore. The most important factor is a flat, level base prepared in advance – our Pre-Build Checklist walks you through getting ready.
We offer a ten year guarantee against rot and decay. More information can be found on the terms and conditions on our website.
Log cabin maintenance need not be an expensive, nor time-consuming job. If you haven't opted for pressure treatment on your cabin, you should treat it with a wood preservative to protect it from insect infestation and rot within a month of delivery and then annually after that.
For a genuinely low-maintenance building that removes the chore of annual anti-rot treatment, consider one of our pressure treated log cabins.
The short answer is no. We want to be completely transparent with our customers: BillyOh log cabins are engineered specifically for leisure, home offices, and storage. They are not designed, nor legally permitted, to be used as self-contained living or sleeping quarters.
To legally live in any garden building in the UK, you must obtain full Planning Permission and comply with strict residential Building Regulations (covering fire safety, sanitation, and energy efficiency). This applies to any living accommodation, regardless of how close or far the building is from your boundary fence.
From a manufacturing standpoint, our cabins do not include running water, electricity, or residential heating systems. They do not meet the Health and Safety requirements for primary dwellings, and attempting to heavily modify the structure to install plumbing or extensive utilities will immediately void your 10-year anti-rot guarantee.
However, if you're simply looking for a cosy space to use during the day—like a home office or a place to host a winter party—our cabins are perfect. Our thicker 44mm logs offer fantastic natural heat retention. For the ultimate daytime winter retreat, we highly recommend our factory-insulated BillyOh Outpost.
When treated correctly, our log cabins could last for two decades if not more.

Log Cabins UK
Designing and manufacturing log cabins for the unpredictable UK climate requires precision. At BillyOh, we don't just supply these buildings – we engineer them in-house. From specialised pre-insulated models to traditional interlocking designs, there's a model to suit every garden space and structural requirement. Because we use high-grade, slow-grown European softwood, our cabins offer fantastic natural durability, whether you need a heavy-duty outdoor workspace or simply secure storage.
Designed and Built In-House
Unlike resellers who buy in and badge their buildings, we design and manufacture our cabins ourselves. That's why we can tell you exactly how a build goes together – we engineered the interlock. It also means consistent, reliable quality, with no mixed timber species and no surprises when your kit arrives.
Building Your Cabin: What to Expect
A log cabin is a bigger build than a shed, so we make the self-assembly experience as straightforward as possible – and we're honest about what's involved before you order. We mill our tongue-and-groove panels to exact micro-tolerances, so the interlocking design forces water to run off the face of the building and offers superior structural rigidity in high winds.
Realistic build times. For most cabins the expected installation timeframe is around 2–3 days, depending on the size of your building and your own DIY experience. The interlocking log design means panels stack and lock together in sequence with no specialist skills required, and we design our cabins to be an enjoyable project to build – just bring patience and a level base.
Everything in the kit. Your cabin arrives as a complete kit with clear, first-timer-friendly instructions. You'll need a few standard tools and, for most models, a second pair of hands.
Expert support when you need it. Our team is on hand to advise on your build – from choosing the right model and timber thickness before you order, to questions that come up during assembly. If you're unsure about anything, talk to us before you start.
Get your base right first. Because natural timber breathes and settles over the first few months, a 100% flat and level foundation is non-negotiable for the logs to lock properly. Before you order, read our Log Cabin Pre-Build Checklist to make sure your base is ready.
Log Cabin Garden Office
A log cabin garden office is one of the smartest investments you can make, but it needs to handle daily use. We've designed these models with thick, robust flooring to support heavy desks, filing cabinets, and multiple monitors – a professional workspace that eliminates the daily commute.
Log Cabin Home Gym
Building a log cabin home gym is a great way to save on memberships, but standard shed floors won't cut it for heavy weights. That's why we offer upgraded 19mm tongue-and-groove floor options on our gym-focused cabins – train in a space specifically structured to handle your equipment.
Log Cabin Sheds
If you're storing valuable lawnmowers or power tools, you want a more premium, secure option than a standard overlap shed. Because our traditional-style cabins double up as log cabin sheds, they use interlocking logs that are incredibly difficult to breach – among the most secure buildings we manufacture. The BillyOh Pro Pent range is a customer favourite for exactly this reason; we recommend wide-opening double doors if you need to move ride-on mowers or bulky furniture in and out.
Insulated Log Cabins
If your goal is guaranteed 365-day comfort, a single layer of logs won't get you through a freezing January without a huge heating bill. That's why our team developed a dedicated line of insulated log cabins. By combining tight-seal double-glazed windows with our proprietary EcoQuilt technology in the roof and floor, we take the headache out of retrofitting insulation yourself.
Plenty of Choice
Because we build to order, you aren't stuck with one generic design. Need maximum natural light? Our log cabin summerhouses feature large windows for epic garden views. Tight on space? Our small log cabins are designed to make the most of a compact plot, while our budget-friendly range keeps quality high and cost down. With choices between apex and modern flat roofs, single or double glazing, and various timber thicknesses, you can build a cabin that perfectly matches your home. For a sleeker look, explore our contemporary log cabins.
Which Log Thickness Do I Need?
The most common mistake we see is customers underestimating the timber thickness they need. Each thickness is really a different type of building – use this quick guide to match it to your use case:
Thickness
What it is
Best use
19mm
This is a shed.
Perfect for storage and summer use. Considerably stronger and more weather-tight than standard overlap panels.
28mm
This is a summerhouse.
The standard for summerhouses and light gym use. Offers improved natural heat retention for comfortable spring and autumn use.
44mm+
This is a true log cabin.
Essential for garden offices and heavy use. Provides maximum structural integrity – pair with double-glazing for year-round comfort.
Pressure Treatment
To maximise the lifespan of your cabin, we highly recommend our in-house pressure treatment. Instead of just dipping the wood, we load the timber into a pressurised tank at our factory, forcing liquid preservative deep into the core of every log. This completely removes the chore of annual anti-rot painting. For a truly low-maintenance building, explore our pressure treated log cabins.
